[ If he's watching, Steve will be able to see the moment Eddie realizes that she's already garnered an audience, the way she falters momentarily, the way she visibly rallies and pulls on her usual mask of nonchalance, tossing her hair back as she stands and hitches her skirt down from where it rode up as she exited his car.
By the time she turns to look at him from over the top of the Beemer, she looks perfectly normal, a little rough around the edges and delighting in it. ]
Sure, why not?
[ Not like she really knows, she's never been to a basketball game before. But she'd prefer to delay this a little longer so that everyone is busy when they slip in through the doors. That'll mean less attention on them, right? ]
[Steve gives his eyes along her for a long moment. It's obvious that he's searching for a signal or a sign that Eddie is having second thoughts. Steve would rather they take the loss instead of Eddie feeling uncomfortable the whole night.
She sure is hiding her second thoughts well. Steve isn't going to press or push. If Eddie really wants to cause Carver to cream himself it's going to happen. ]
[ Eddie doesn't carry a purse. But what she does have is a jacket that, while not especially warm, is plenty roomy enough for her to keep a packet of cigarettes and a lighter in the inside pocket, a packet that just so happens to also have a pre-roll tucked in it for safekeeping.
Already fishing them out as she circles around the car to join Steve where he stands, she does an excellent job of pretending she doesn't notice the stares her almost-bare legs garner. ]
We can finish it later, [ she says as she places the joint between her lips and flicks on the lighter. ] So we don't miss the kick off or whatever it's called.
[Jesus, it's going to be a fucking long night. Personally, Steve doesn't know how long he's going to be able to handle all these teens gawking over Eddie or the sharp stares from Nancy. God, what in the hell was he thinking?
Steve shifts to lean his back against his car, back towards the entrance of Hawkins High. At least its a pretty nice night? That's a plus, right? A good time for first time boners and sinning.
He shoots Eddie a look at her comment. Kick off, seriously?]
[ Like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. She knows that's not what it's called, but annoying Steve about sports is always funny, and it certainly settles her in a way that she really needs right now, almost as much as the familiar burn in her lungs as she inhales.
Holding the smoke in her lungs, she reaches up and offers the joint to Steve, either uncaring that people are watching her smoke weed in the parking lot or not realizing what a spectacle she is right now. It hardly matters; what matters is that she's already feeling miles more confident, her posture easing a little as she braces one hand on the metal of Steve's car and leans in close to him in a half-assed effort to hide what they're doing. ]
[It's hard to tell when Eddie is actually being serious or busting his balls about a sport. Regardless, it does slightly annoy him that she has no knowledge of basketball. Any sport for that matter.
Steve shifts his own body as he moves to pluck the lit joint from Eddie's lips. He takes his own hit, holding the smoke in his lungs before blowing it up towards the sky.
[ She grins at him for a moment, watching as he sucks a hit off the joint before shaking her head and letting the smoke seep out of her mouth. ]
Nah, I know that's not what it's called.
[ Does she know what it is called, though? No. Of course she doesn't. Wayne loves basketball, will always watch the game when it's on, but she's learned to turn it into white noise.
She watches the picture Steve paints as he lifts his chin and blows the smoke in his lungs away from her, the way his throat stretches, the way the light from the floodlights attached to the gym limn him with a bright white glow like he's some kind of saint in a painting. It's deeply irritating, how attractive he can be sometimes. She doesn't know what she's done to warrant having his friendship. She's grateful for it. For him.
Reaching out, she knocks her knuckles into his sternum and waits until he looks back into her face. ] Thanks, Steve.
[He calls her out on the lie. That's like him trying to pretend that he actually knows who in the hell Metallica is. Eddie seems pretty wild about them, like all of that metal shit she seems to be into.
Steve takes another hit from the joint, inhaling the smoke and holding it a little longer in his lungs. He's actually pretty thankful that Eddie offered to smoke up before the game. It's easing his own nerves a bit, chilling him out. He parts his lips to allow the smoke to spill from them, his eyes trying their best not to focus so much on Eddie and how close she is.
Jesus, don't touch him Eddie. You can't do that whole wearing a short skirt!
...Throw off? [ She squints at him, biting her lip against an even bigger grin. ] First toss?
[ Apparently she learned more football terms through osmosis than basketball, but who cares. They're all sports with balls and too much testosterone. Give her a complicated riff any day, she thinks scales are way more impressive than touchdowns or three-pointer throws.
Well. It might also depend on who's doing the throwing, if she's honest. If Carver sinks the ball in the net she's not going to care much, but if Lucas does it, she'll cheer. Or if she sees Steve doing it...
Focus. She raps him on the chest again, thunking her rings against his shirt for emphasis. ] I mean it. You're a good guy.
[How can Steve possibly argue when Eddie is biting her lip like that? Why does a simple lip bite make her appear oddly innocent even when standing in a mini skirt? He's going to have to adjust himself before this damn night is over.
And the damn parking lot doesn't have much to focus on either. He's pretty much screwed.
Now she's thumbing his chest and stating that he's an alright guy? Shit-
[ She doesn't really know what he's telling her to stop, but she assumes it's the "good guy" comment, or her thanking him yet again. She thinks it's important that he hears it, though. He's a good friend. This is above and beyond for many people she knows, even if she didn't take into account the whole "ditching his date" part of the evening.
But she does drop it, sighing and shaking her head at him before she reaches out and grabs his wrist and pulls his hand up to her mouth so she can duck down a little and suck a hit off the joint he's still holding pinched between his fingers. ]
[The whole "you're a good guy" comment still doesn't sit easy with Steve. He understands that it's meant as a compliment, an improvement from the asshole he once was. Only that's the problem, he was a huge asshole. In his whole mean girl Era, he wasn't exactly the nicest towards Eddie or her little friend group.
Well, it was mostly fuckking Tommy.
Steve would like to think even back then he wouldn't allow some Jesus loving prick to jump Eddie.
He turns his head as she grabs his wrist, watching as her head leans in so that she can suck down a hit. It's insane how incredibly hot she can make smoking a joint look.
Or maybe it's just the way her lips wrap perfectly around it and she inhales the smoke? The way those dark curls fall around her pretty face.
[ Steve and his cronies weren't exactly fans of her when they were in school, but she did escape some of their worst vitriol through being female; some of her friends weren't quite so lucky. Sure, she got some pretty vicious rumors spread about it, but she didn't get swirlied, or punched in the locker room, or whatever else might have been going on with the boys. The girls like Carol Perkins were definitely meaner, but a least they used their words.
Eddie has a thick skin. Carol couldn't hurt her any worse than her own parents did, and it infuriated her. Which, admittedly, was one of the reasons Eddie made it so blatantly obvious that she didn't care what anyone thought. It was entertaining to see how worked up she could get Carol to get before things came to a head.
She doesn't remember Steve really participating in any of the hazing, which might be why she's been so quick to forgive and forget. Or maybe it's just the bond formed by nearly dying together. That kind of stuff is hard to get around.
She hums softly as she straightens, lifting her hand off his and ruffling her fingers through her hair to get it out of her face a little, her eyes closing for a moment before she shakes herself and twists her mouth to blow the smoke away from them both. ] Okay. You ready? [ She shivers. ]
[Steve never understood why Tommy did some of the shitty things he did to other students. Then again, Steve never really asked him why because he typically laughed and went about his business. Steve did his fair share of shitty things but he tried to set his own limits.
Serious issues didn't start to arise until Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler came into the picture. The end result cost him Nancy along with Tommy and Carol. Steve had told himself that the loss of Tommy and his incredibly bitchy girlfriend weren't much of a loss but after the break up with Nancy-
Was anything actually worth what he gave up in order to keep her?
He sighs lowly at the question. Was he actually ready for this? No, not really but hopefully it would be worth it in the end. ]
Sure.
[Steve shrugs off his jacket, noting the shiver from Eddie. It was kind of her not to notice. ]
[ Eddie can't help eyeing Steve as he slips off his jacket, her brow furrowing for a moment until she figures out what's going on. ]
Oh, are we trading? [ That would definitely be one way to get people talking. If Eddie showing up in an old Hawkins High jacket wasn't enough, Steve rocking up in a beat up leather jacket with the chain on the wrist is basically them taking out a billboard along Main Street. ] If I had known it was this easy to get you in some better clothes I'd have done this much earlier.
[ Like this whole thing was her idea.
Still, she shrugs out of her own thinner jacket and hands it off to Steve so they can switch. As she shrugs his on, she tries not to breathe in too obviously: Steve's fancy rich-boy cologne scent is strongest at the collar and it's all she can focus on right now. She's terrified her cheeks are pink enough that he'll notice. She's trying to be co, but it's harder than she thought it would be. ]
[He argues as they make the switch. Steve also figures that maybe wearing his jacket will make Eddie feel a bit more covered in her appearance. She's going to be warm and snug regardless.
Steve pulls Eddie's jacket on, it's a bit of a tight fit considering Steve's a bit bigger in the chest, arms and shoulders. He inhales the scent of leather, weed and is that a hint of perfume? It smells-
[ She's laughing softly as she tugs on the hem of his jacket, the edge barely covering her ass. She's almost as tall as Steve, but she's a little longer in the torso than he is, and while the skirt makes her legs look longer than they are, his jacket is still sitting at just about where a jacket should. If she did it up it would probably hug her hips nice and snug.
Steve looks good in her leather. It's a little too snug to be practical, but he makes it look good, his broad swimmer's shoulders stretching the leather out just enough to really accentuate the shape of his torso. Eddie has to clear her throat a little more than expected as she pinches off the joint and tucks what's left of it into her pocket.
She jostles her elbow against his and takes a step away from his car. ]
[Steve has never thought much of leather. It's not exactly his style. He's more polo shirts and tight jeans. Eddie is a different story all together though. Leather suits her perfectly and even more so when topped off with a little skirt.
Steve can't deny its an attractive look.
He suddenly stops for a moment once he catches sight of her in his jacket. Goddamn, does this girl look incredible in every fucking jacket she wears? Why does his own have to fit her nicely? Like it's meant for her to wear and show off like all those other girls had.
Only Eddie looks like she belongs in it.
Fuck. ]
You think hitting me in a tiny skirt is a good idea? You might flash your ass.
[ Steve pauses for a second when he looks at her, and there's a part of Eddie that crows in the back of her head — he's checking her out! — but she brushes that aside, deciding instead to throw him a challenging grin and spin a little so she's walking backwards between the parked cars, throwing her arms out to the side like she's daring him to come at her. ]
Isn't that the whole point of this?
[ They decided to try and get Carver to bust a nut over her, didn't they?
Eddie still thinks Steve's blowing hot air up her ass about whether or not other jocks find her attractive, but if there's one thing Eddie loves to do, it's play pretend and dress up. This is a slightly more public venue than she usually uses, but the principle is the same. Steve's varsity letterman jacket and her ridiculous mini skirt are a layer of metaphorical armor that she's using to protect herself as she pretends this is perfectly normal and not at all a situation that makes sweat crop up along the back of her neck. ]
[Is he checking her out? The better question here is it that obvious? Steve tries to hide the way his eyes linger along her for a good long second or five. He's totally drinking her in, admiring her toned legs and the way his jacket hugs her form.
This is literally the weapon of women.
Steve flashes her that famous Steve Harrington smirk. Come on, Eddie knows the one all so well. Almost instantly Steve moves to follow after her, eyes focusing on her every move. ]
And you're a tease? Carver is going to stroke out.
I am tonight! [ she declares, a little spring in her step that accentuates the sway of her hips for a few steps before she stumbles and barks out a much more familiar laugh, catching herself on the side of someone's Jeep. ]
Fuck, that's a lot harder than it looks. And I'm not even wearing heels. [ That was one thing she wasn't willing to change for tonight. Breaking her ankle would not be worth making Carver make a fool of himself. ]
[Of course he isn't checking her out! That would just be ridiculous and weird. Eddie is his friend, a friend that he's gotten pretty damn close with these past few months. Steve could easily compare his relationship with Eddie to the one he had with Robin.
Only it's not.
Eddie isn't gay and she sure as hell doesn't mind flashing her ass in a skirt. No way in hell would Robin be so bold.
Steve tries not to fixate on the way Eddie's hips sway and the skirt inches up ever so slightly with each step. It takes him a moment to realize that he's checking out Eddie's ass and the way the mini skirt has shaped it nicely.
Yeah. Shit. ]
Jesus!
[He calls out as she stumbles suddenly and his hand is grabbing the back of the jacket to help Eddie regain a bit of her footing. ]
[ Eddie's seen the way Real Girls manhandle their boyfriends, the way they use them for balance, how they clutch at their hands and arms and lean their weight on them. Eddie is a damn sight taller than most girls she knows, and she's never had a proper boyfriend to parade around school, but she can pretend.
When Steve reaches out to steady her, it's easy to reach back, to grab his arm and slip hers through his so they're linked at the elbow. ]
I'm good. [ She squeezes his arm and bumps into him a little, knocking her shoulder against his and turning to grin at him, the expression a little smaller and a little more honest than the one she gave him earlier. ] You're here to protect me, right?
[Steve has been that exact guy plenty of times. He's hand many girls hanging off his arm and giggling as they paraded around the school like they owned the damn place. It had been enjoyable at the time he happened to be king.
How the girls basically swooned over him and begged to be his next.
Eddie had never shown any interest herself back in those days. Not that Steve would have noticed considering all the girls he had been sleeping with each week. However; it does catch him a bit off guard when Eddie grins and links their arms.
This is new. ]
Always.
[That word falls from Steve's lips unexpectedly and it leaves his face burning. The hell was that?
[ Always, he says, chivalrous like some kind of knight from her stories, and if she wasn't leaning on him for balance and hadn't synched up their steps, Eddie knows she would have stumbled again. What the hell, Harrington. It's so unfair to pull the moves out on her like that, she wasn't remotely prepared!
She should have been, though. Probably. Steve's never joined in on D&D, has often proclaimed at great length and at full volume that he'd never play their nerd game even if they paid him, but she's come to know him as the kind of person who throws himself whole-heartedly into anything that's put in front of him. Even, apparently, if that something is pretending to be with her to both protect her virtue and also to upset those looking to besmirch it.
She only just barely manages to resist the urge to pull her hair in front of her face and instead huffs at him, a smile tucked in the corner of her mouth as they approach the doors to the gym. ]
